At the beginning of the 17th century, Duke Johann the Younger of Glücksburg wanted to set up a harbor here on the Baltic Sea coast in order to drive sea trade in competition with Flensburg. Construction began in 1621, and a year later the church was inaugurated. It was called the "New Church," and that name passed to the parish, the smallest in Anhalt.
