Markdorf Old Town and the Lower Gate

The stone foundations of a rectangular hall church from the Carolingian period have been preserved in the central nave. It was the Barons of Markdorf's own church and was expanded to include the choir in the 11th century. There was probably a previous wooden church.[4] The lower part of the 68 meter high tower dates from around 1200. It used to be part of the city fortifications and probably served as a defensive tower. At the back there is an entrance a few meters high that can be accessed via ladders. The current tower was built on the lower part in 1966. After 1200 a church was built in the Romanesque style; It was about the same size as today's central nave and had a choir leaning against the tower.[1] Rudolf Plebanus is documented as the first people's priest in 1200 (Wikipedia).

Untertor (Lower Gate) in Markdorf

The Untertor is part of the oldest part of the city's fortifications and was built between 1230 and 1250. This is indicated, among other things, by the gate tower with the boss blocks at the corners.

The stepped gables and the arched doorway with sandstone capitals on both sides are also striking. After the town was threatened by the Bermating farmers in 1525, a porch was added in 1534 to reinforce the gate of the previously very narrow tower.

In 1875, the Grand Ducal District Office of Überlingen warned the Markdorf city council to demolish the Untertorturm so that the narrow archway would no longer hinder traffic.
