Market Square and Town Hall, Weil der Stadt

Highlight • Historical Site

Weil der Stadt's town hall was probably built in 1582, but fell victim to the devastating town fire almost half a century later and was destroyed by the flames. The Renaissance building was rebuilt a short time later in 1669, while retaining its historical features.
The town hall's round-arched arcades - now also known as "arcades" - used to house the Metzel and Bort arcades and are a reminder of the town's importance as a market and trading place.
Two coats of arms adorn the town hall's facades: the imperial coat of arms proudly stands on the west side. The south facade, on the other hand, bears the town's coat of arms with the imperial eagle, the St. Peter's key and the inscription S.P.Q.R. (Senatus Populusque Romanus: "Senate and People of Rome") as a sign of the historical connection to the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.

Besides a small museum, the city has erected a large monument to its world-famous son in the market square. Furthermore, Weil der Stadt has officially been allowed to call itself a "Kepler City" since January 1, 2022.

The church rises as a monument that can be seen from far above the town center of Weil der Stadt. The late Gothic hall building was built from red sandstone in 1492 or 1512 as the successor to a Romanesque basilica. The late Romanesque east towers, built in the 13th century, and the west tower, added in the late 14th century, give the church an imposing silhouette.
After the nave was destroyed in 1648, a comprehensive restoration took place in 1869. For a long time, the Peter and Paul Church symbolized the "surrounded" imperial city's adherence to the old faith.
Inside, the church houses important works of art, including a late Gothic crucifixion group from the Ulm School (around 1460/70), a Renaissance tabernacle by Georg Miler from 1611, a Baroque high altar from 1700 and a Rococo pulpit from 1742. Particularly noteworthy are the stained glass windows by Jokarl Huber from 1940, which show, among other things, a depiction of Hitler as Satan.

From 1978 to 1983, an extensive interior renovation was carried out, which preserved the church's splendor and historical significance.

Former Augustinian Monastery Weil der Stadt

Highlight • Historical Site

After the Augustinian Order received permission from the Hirsau Monastery to establish a monastery in Weil in 1294, the foundation stone of the monastery complex was laid in 1295. The building was completed in the course of the 15th century, and in 1492 the Gothic tracery windows with inscriptions on the history of the order were installed in the cloister.
As a result of the Augustinians' conscientious commemoration of the dead, the monastery was very popular with the citizens as a burial place. The building today consists of three wings: the east wing, the north wing and the west wing. The east wing housed the prior's living quarters and the dining room, with an inscription in stucco relief "You have touched our hearts with your love". The north wing served as a dormitory and the west wing housed guest rooms. For over 50 years, the monastery fought against the settlement of the Capuchins, as the city with its predominantly Protestant environment seemed too small for two mendicant orders. In 1812, the monastery was closed after the end of the Old Empire and the associated mediatization and secularization.
The Augustinian monastery was originally a four-winged complex - the Augustinian church formed the south wing. This church was demolished when the monastery was closed in 1812. Today, the west wing houses the city archives, and the east wing houses the Catholic parish office. The upper floors serve as club rooms, and the well-known Weiler youth center also has its place here.
