Beautiful section of the path south of the Verkaån (Verkefluss), through sparse forest and partly directly on the river. Alternative to the path north of the river, which offers completely different impressions.

Andrarum Alum Works Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Where you are standing in front of these ruins there was once an active industry. Several hundred people were employed with the production of alum at Andrarum Alum Works. Yellow smoke, smelling of sulphur, lay thick over the hill. In 1640 alum was manufactured for the first time in Andrarum and produced until 1929 when the Alum Works were shut down.

If you asked yourself now, what alum is: the scientific name is Potassium aluminium sulfate. It was used for dying yarn, tanning leather as well as for water purification and as a blood clotting agent. Today, alum is produced artificially.
