Parish Church of the Nativity of Mary

The Oberweilingen Church of the Birth of Mary, a choir tower from around 1225, was redesigned in the 14th and 17th centuries. The church furnishings date from the early 18th century. In 1913 the church was extended by eight meters. In the church you will find the Gothic ribbed vault with a keystone and profiled consoles with coats of arms. A rose is carved on the eastern keystone, but the western one has been chipped. The choir vault is still present in the original Romanesque structure.
The fortified cemetery with its two gate towers and the Lourdes Grotto, built in 1905, leaves a special impression. In general, the church and cemetery fortifications form a townscape that is rarely seen. In the Middle Ages, the fortifications served the population as a refuge from the passing warriors. During the Thirty Years' War on July 7, 1632, the rectory including the barn and stables, part of the church tower and the village of Oberweiling, apart from a few houses, were burned down by the Swedish troops.
Benedict XVI celebrated a service in Oberweiling a year and a half before his appointment as Pope, on August 29, 2003.
