St John the Baptist Church, Itchen Abbas

Highlight • Religious Site

Saint JOHN BAPTIST, to whom this church in Itchen-Abbas is dedicated, is a person on the threshold of the Old and New Testaments (just like the Holy Family with Mary and Joseph). His parents are Zacharias and Elizabeth. After the announcement of the Incarnation of God through them, the Mother of God visits her relative Elizabeth, who will give birth to a son in old age, namely John the Baptist. He is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner/pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches repentance from sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan. Jesus also comes there to be baptized, and is filled with the Holy Spirit who descends upon him from heaven.
The feast day of Saint John Baptist in the calendar of saints is June 24th, exactly half a year before 'Christmas Eve'.

A poignant information board giving the story of a multi plane crash in May 1944 involving several Spitfires. Overlooks a beautiful valley.

The Fulling Mill is a beautiful, Grade II-listed thatch cottage on the River Alre. The mill was built in the 13th century to tighten and shrink cloth. The cottage is privately owned but you can admire it across the river.

New Alresford town centre

Highlight • Historical Site

New Alresford is a pretty Georgian town renowned for pastel painted buildings, riverside walks, and independent shops. It is the UK capital of watercress farming, too. In the Middle Ages, Alresford had one of the country’s biggest sheep fairs and still has a rich fair heritage. With plenty of places for food and drink, a range of accommodation, and tourist attractions, it is a good place for a pit-stop or an overnight stay.

St John the Baptist Church, New Alresford

Highlight • Historical Site

St John’s is an elegant church in the heart of New Alresford. The church was built in the 13th century but was almost entirely rebuilt in 1898, save for the West Tower. Owing to the significant restoration, St John’s is Grade II-listed.

Avington Park Mansion

Highlight • Historical Site

Avington Park is a grand, 16th-century house that lies in stunning parkland. The Grade I-listed mansion underwent significant renovation and construction in the 17th century and again in the 18th century. In 1847, it was bought by the brother of the poet, Percey Bysshe Shelley.

Still privately owned, Avington is opened occasionally to the public and is also a wedding and conference venue.

Itchen Abbas Mill Channel

Highlight • River

This picturesque channel diverts water briefly from the River Itchen, suggesting that its adjacent building was once a mill. This little channel feels hidden from view, on one of the Itchen's many idiosyncratic deviations.

The Itchen Way, a footpath, passes right by and the Three Castles Path goes along the road immediately north.
