Orval Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

Orval Abbey is a legendary place that combines history, culture, spirituality, and gourmet delights. The famous Orval Trappist beer is still brewed here, according to the original recipe. The label of the Orval bottle, as well as many of the abbey's ornaments, features a trout and a ring. Legend has it that Countess Mathilde de Canossa accidentally dropped her wedding ring into a fountain here. She prayed to God, and a trout appeared on the surface of the water, carrying the precious ring in its mouth. "It's a Val d'Or," cried the noblewoman. And she decided to found a monastery in this blessed place...

Ruins of the Cistercian Abbey

Highlight • Historical Site

Already in 1132, the Cistercian abbey Orval was founded. The abbey came to fabulous wealth until it was looted and burnt down during the First Coalition War in 1793. The monks left the ruin. Even today, you can visit the romantic ruins next to the new building of the monastery. In the "Communs Abraham", the only surviving building you can visit an extensive exhibition on the history of the monastery and the brewery art.

Opening times and entrance fees can be found at orval.be/en/27/Discoverments.

À l’Ange Gardien is a surprising place; as part of the world-famous Orval site, it undoubtedly contributes to the region's tourism development. The fully renovated and modernized building meets all modern needs and requirements (proximity to parking, accessibility for people with disabilities, Wi-Fi, etc.). Here, you can enjoy the widest selection of Orval products. Both the beer and cheese are at their finest. L’Ange Gardien also exclusively serves Orval on tap, better known as the Green Orval.

View of the Abbey's castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Château d’Orval was built on the old foundations of an earlier castle near the largest monastery in the country, the Orval Abbey. The castle was originally the home of the abbot.

Recommendation to discover this hiking trail at dusk.
Have fun with the playful bats that seem to be playing tag at times.

Always nice that you can stay at the waterfront. The babbling river always brings peace to your mind. A location to enjoy.
