The Natura 2000 area Bunderbos and Elslooërbos includes a series of forests on the steep, eastern slope of the Meuse valley between Elsloo and Bunde, namely the Hoge and Lage Bos near Elsloo, the Geulderbos near Geulle and the Armenbos and the Bunderbos near Bunde. The northern forests contain numerous calcareous springs and streams and are considered the most beautiful spring forests in our country. The area is also home to the only example of lime tuff springs in our country.

Elsloo Castle and Elsloo Historic Centre

Time has stood still in the old center of Elsloo. This part is an undiscovered gem with cobbled streets and old brick houses with red and white shutters. The beautiful Elsloo Castle is located along the Maas. Originally it was larger, but the river partially washed it away. There is still a fairytale castle with an overgrown castle tower, an old mill and a castle park full of walking paths along trees, springs, waterfalls and ponds.
Elsloo is the 'oldest farming village in the Netherlands'. Finds dating back to 5000 BC have been made here, showing that the Linear Ceramists, Europe's first farmers, had settled here. You can learn all about this in the Streekmuseum Elsloo.

Elsloo Castle

The castle is the continuation of a complex of a former brewery with an indoor water mill and a farm with barns and stables, located halfway up the Maasberg. With the exception of the brewhouse, the current castle complex includes the same parts. The brewhouse was converted into a residence in the 17th century, but was not rebuilt after several fires.
The castle consists of a rectangular building, in which the water mill is incorporated and in later times the round indoor tower was added. The current owner is Stichting het Limburgs Landschap. The castle is now operated as a hotel - restaurant - bistro.
