Motte Alde Berg

Highlight • Historical Site

The castle was a knightly fief seat. Contrary to traditional, never documented views - all of which go back to the local historian and local chronicle, Franz Mayer - all the evidence suggests that the castle was built in the late 12th century. The builder of the Motte, a servant and knight "miles de orsbeke", feudal man and - according to documentary evidence, a possible coalitionist of the contesting party of the Archbishop of Cologne in the famous knight battle of the Battle of Worringen, used a headland protruding into the wetland and "modeled" from it the still impressive tower hill with 50 x 50 m measuring outer bailey and the surrounding ramparts and dry trenches (always above the flood level).

Due to the rainy "hottest" summer ever, some paths on the Lower Rhine are no longer passable. We had to turn back but found a worthy replacement

Beautiful little lake that has been extensively restored not long ago. The result - e.g. the unused fish ladder is probably controversial among residents, but quite nice to look at for the "cyclist".

I'm a huge fan of the water views. I was all the more pleased to come across this one. Even though I couldn't stand on it because I was already being watched from the side...

Inventive drilling engineer as namesake for the waters at the foot of the moth "Alde Berg" A place for romantics! Idyllic as in an English landscape park is the gatehouse of the former mansion of Anton Raky on the shore of the pond. Benches invite you to enjoy the view. On the circular route A2 you can take a short walk through the nature reserve Helpensteiner Bachtal. The path on the dam between the two ponds leads you to one of the largest castle hills in the Rhineland. Twelve meters high and 20 meters in diameter, the artificially constructed mound measures. He is a testimony of a moth - a type of castle very common in the Middle Ages on the Lower Rhine. Finally, take a short walk down Anton-Raky Street to the water. View. But who was this man named after the road and pond? Anton Raky was an inventor, engineer, and entrepreneur who made a name for himself with the development of drilling machines for mining. With the help of his patented drilling crane, for example, it was possible to drill oil wells of up to 340 meters at the end of the 19th century. When the headquarters of the International Drilling Company was relocated to Erkelenz, Mr. Raky planned a huge mansion here on the pond, but it was never completed and was blown up in the 1970s.

Motte Aldeberg Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Aldeberg Motte is a ruined tower hill castle from the High and Late Middle Ages, located in the Helpensteiner Bach valley between the towns of Arsbeck and Dalheim-Rödgen. The complex consisted of a mighty hill and a large outer bailey. Beech trees grow on the site today. Little is known about the early history of the motte. It is believed to have been built in the late 12th century.

The castle was located on a promontory jutting into the wetlands of the Helpensteinbach stream. Until the late 14th or early 15th century, it was an important manor, responsible for local dispute resolution and jurisdiction, tax exemptions, and horse breeding. Later, the estate declined in importance and was eventually abandoned.

April 18, 2022,🌟 NSG Helpensteiner Bachtal 2.6 - Biberdamm (Off-Grid), Alde Berg und Anton-Raky-Weiher
The area around the Anton-Raky-Weiher has become very beautiful as a result of the development measures in recent years. Even today, on Easter Monday, the "insider tip" character is evident, the route was only cautiously visited by cyclists and hikers.

Our little Crown Prince Basti weakened a bit yesterday evening (cause unclear), today he is already better, but we only wanted to do a little tour to protect ourselves. The less well-known and therefore only frequented region around the Helpensteiner Bachtal is ideal for a public holiday in Germany. For us, this route is always a highlight despite the few …
