Location advantages

The Oldenburg port is located in the center of the up-and-coming Weser-Ems region and offers short, logistical routes to the regional economy and around two million end consumers.

Oldenburg is trimodally connected to the hinterland via motorway, rail and waterway.

As a combined sea and inland port, Oldenburg has efficient transshipment facilities and storage capacities, especially for agricultural goods, building materials, secondary raw materials and project cargo. At the same time, the port is home to manufacturing companies that receive and ship raw materials and products by ship.

In the innovative and dynamic university city of Oldenburg, the port is considered one of the economic engines alongside the various growth sectors located there, such as energy, IT or media, as well as the broad research landscape. As part of the city of Oldenburg's tourism concept, the port offers an attractive port of call for river cruise ships and passenger ships as well as pleasure boats.

Water Tower at Oldenburg Harbour

Highlight • Monument

Building

The 33 m high round tower stands on a polygonal base. Plastered pilasters structure the brickwork of the shaft. Windows are set into the fields between the pilasters on four sides. The steel water tank is located at the top. It has a capacity of 500 m³ and is now clearly visible. It was originally covered with plaster. A tent roof tops the building.

Original use

The tower was built in 1908 by the architect Köhler on behalf of the Grand Ducal Railway Directorate. It served to supply water to the steam locomotives and later also supplied water for the hydrants at Oldenburg Central Station. The water tank was not filled with drinking water, but with water from the Hunte. The water quality was sufficient for the purposes.

View of the Hunte Bridge

Highlight • Viewpoint

It's a beautiful day, it drives you out of town. So you jump on your bike, possibly crossing the rolling bridge
(komoot.de/highlight/226474),
or come from the port (komoot.de/highlight/3310351)
and then past the traffic jam (komoot.de/highlight/1528446).
But then you see it already, this huge bridge that leads the A29 over the Huntetal. In the meantime, the imposing building with its 8 posts is showing its age and needs to be restored or replaced. But you know, on the way out of the city or back in along the Hunte, the Hunte Bridge is the impressive monument from which every excursion actually begins or ends.
Behind the Bornhorster Huntewiesen nature reserve and the Moorhauser Polder spread out. Maybe you are drawn to the Weser via Huntebrück and Elsfleth. Or you just do a lap around Oldenburg, in parts or completely. In any case, the sight of the Huntebrücke will remain in your memory as a piece of modern building aesthetics.
The view from the bridge is also worthwhile. However, there are a few steps to climb.

Hunte Bridge (A29)

Highlight • Bridge

The road bridge over the Hunte shipping lane on the A29 east of Oldenburg is a prestressed concrete structure with a total length of 441 m and runs over ten spans. The structure has been in use for over 40 years. As a result of a recalculation of the superstructures together with an object-related damage analysis (OSA) for some of the damage observed, an undiminished remaining service life could not be proven. This was followed by a feasibility study for the new construction of the superstructures and the continued use of the substructures as well as a main structural inspection in accordance with DIN 1076. The feasibility study considered, among other things, replacing the superstructures with lightweight composite structures while repairing the substructures. However, this variant, which has been proven to be feasible, was preferred to a complete replacement new construction. The new construction will take place one after the other for each substructure so that traffic can continue to flow on the second substructure throughout the construction period.

Little Bornhorster Lake

Highlight • Lake

The Kleiner Bornhorster See is a quarry lake in the eastern part of Oldenburg (Oldenburg) not far from the border with the Wesermarsch district, which runs only about 500 meters to the northeast. However, it is already outside of the denser urban development of Oldenburg. The lake is near the small town of Groß Bornhorst and the Oldenburg district of Etzhorn, both west of the lake. The Hunte flows three kilometers south of it.
