Porto Badisco Bay

Highlight • Beach

Porto Badisco is a seaside resort in Salento, in the municipality of Otranto, and is famous for its bay of sand and rocks, with crystal clear sea and unspoiled nature. Porto Badisco is linked to the legend of the landing place of Aeneas, the Trojan hero who fled from his destroyed city and landed on this coast, as described in Virgil's Aeneid

May 20, 2025,Porto Badisco - Faro di Punto Palascia (östlichster Punkt Italiens)
A very beautiful hike in warm May. You can start the hike fortified at the café in Badisko. Higher shoes are recommended due to thistles, rocks, and snakes (!). The lighthouse is only visible when you're standing on the cliff, and if you're lucky, the espresso van will be right there.

This trail was fantastic! I would recommend though hiking from Otranto to Porto Badisco, eating at Bar da Carlo, and then taking the bus back. This option is only available in the summer months when the busses are running regularly (or at all, as we found out being 2 days without a rental car and stranded by the train/bus schedule …
We kept our eyes on the sea as we walked through rocky meadows along the cliffy coast. The bathing bay of Porto Badisco is likely to be more popular in the summer than at this time of year.
On the way to Capo d'Otranto, we discovered the medieval watchtower Torre Sant'Emiliano, high above the cliffs. From here, you can enjoy …

Here I have placed a few photos of Otranto. The actual hike begins 6 kilometers south at Capo d'Otranto. It is the easternmost point of Italy. Partially pathless it goes over rocky terraces and over meadows interspersed with stones. Rewarding, but also a bit exhausting.
