Description
If you're looking for an easy, high-reward rainforest experience in El Yunque, the Angelito Swimming Hole loop from Río Mameyes delivers. This hiking route is rated easy, covering 1.8 miles (2.9 km) with a gentle 267 feet (81 metres) of elevation gain, and takes about 50 minutes to complete. It's perfect for families or anyone wanting a quick dip in a natural pool without a strenuous trek.
What to expect on Angelito Swimming Hole loop from Río Mameyes
The trail immerses you in lush rainforest from the start, winding through thick greenery and tall Tabonuco trees. While the path begins with packed gravel, expect sections of uneven mud and concrete, especially after rain, so watch your footing. You'll cross a bridge before the sounds of the rushing Río Mameyes signal your approach to the main attraction: Las Damas Pool. This natural swimming hole is a tranquil spot to cool off, relax on rocks, and enjoy the 'natural Jacuzzi' areas formed by boulders. It's an easy walk, but the slippery sections mean you'll want good shoes.
Planning your visit
One of the best things about the Angelito Trail is its accessibility; you don't need a permit for entry, unlike some other areas in El Yunque. The trail is well-trafficked by both tourists and locals, so expect company. Be aware that flash flooding can occur unexpectedly in the rivers, especially during heavy rains, so it's always advisable to check current conditions before visiting. The water in Las Damas Pool might not always be crystal clear, but it's usually refreshing.
