The city wall around the old town is still largely intact; particularly impressive in the south-west along the coast with promenade and railway line and in the east.

In the heart of Faro, Portugal's southernmost city and the capital of the Algarve region, there is a charming square known as Praça de D. Afonso III. Arco da Vila, Faro

Highlight • Monument

he "City Archway" or "The Gate to the Old Town" was erected at the beginning of the 19th century on a medieval entrance portal by order of Bishop D. Francisco Gomes de Avelar. The construction plan comes from the Italian architect Francisco Xavier Fabri.
In a niche above the portal you can see Saint Thomas Aquinas, who is said to have saved the city from the plague. The Italian Marble Statue is a representative example of Italian Neoclassicism in the Algarve.
Inside is the Islamic portal, which was part of the original Moorish city wall. Due to its well-preserved condition, it is one of the unique examples of Islamic architecture in Portugal.
With the »Arco do Repouso« and the »Porta Nova« there are two other entrances to the city.

Arch of Rest

Highlight • Historical Site

The eastern entrance to the medieval walls was an arched gate, called the Arco do Repouso (because Afonso III rested there), for those coming from the countryside.
This entrance was reinforced in the 13th century with two Albarran towers of Almohad origin, whose purpose was to defend one of the most vulnerable entrances to the city.
Their defensive innovation was the development of the concept of the passive counterattack, in which anyone approaching the wall or gate was fired upon from behind. This occurred due to the position of the towers relative to the wall.
This gate is associated with the conquest of Faro by the Christians under the command of Alfonso III on March 29, 1249. According to legend, the capture of Faro was peaceful and without bloody battles.
Legend tells us that a Christian knight and a Moorish princess fell in love. For this reason, the Moorish woman was accused of treason by her father, the Arab governor, and was therefore bewitched and condemned to remain in that place forever.
