Who has probably already used this path? Smugglers, bandits and crooks? Anyway, today it is a great hiking trail. :)

St. Blasien Cathedral (Dom St. Blasius)

Highlight • Religious Site

The so-called "Black Forest Cathedral" was inaugurated in 1783 as an abbey church with what was then the third largest church dome in Europe. The dome - diameter 36 meters, height 63 meters - is still one of the largest in Europe. The architect Pierre Michel d'Ixnard built the building based on the model of the Pantheon in Rome. The proportions of the building are perfectly coordinated.

You can find more information, for example about the opening times, here: dom-st-blasien.de.

Horbach Viewpoint (1000 m)

Highlight • Viewpoint

View of Dachsberg, Höchenschwander Berg, Albtal and, on a clear day, the Swiss Alps and the Swiss Jura.

The path from the viewpoint down to Horbach is steep and rocky, so good footwear is required. The steep path is provided with a handrail for safety.

May 21, 2023,🌲 Albsteig Schwarzwald Etappe 3, von Wittenschwand bis St. Blasien als Rundweg
Today's stage takes us from Wittenschwand to Sankt Blasien and includes two "don't worry-ascents".

But let's start at the beginning: we parked at the kindergarten in Dachsberg and were able to record the end of yesterday's stage a few meters away. The smugglers' path offered a small climb, rock walls and a tree schnapps bar. We wondered if liquor wasn't …

What a fabulous third stage on the Albsteig. On the way from Wittenschwand to St. Blasien, my hiking heart beats particularly high... ♥️🥾

Our highlights:
⭐️ On an old smugglers' path we climbed over hill and dale to Höll today.

⭐️ The climbing continued up to the Bildsteinfelsen with a fantastic view over the southern Alb valley.

Today, the second stage of the Albsteig Trail from Wolpadingen to St. Blasien, with beautiful trails, magnificent views of the Alb Valley, and St. Blasien Cathedral rounding out the tour.
We parked in St. Blasien and took the bus to Wolpadingen, then hiked from there to St. Blasien.

The day begins with a farewell. We leave the river Alb and a short, crisp ascent brings us to the plateau of Wolpadingen. Unfortunately, today we can only look at the desired view of the Alps on the bronze plaque that has been set up and so, after a short glance, we let us continue on our way, towards the …
