Listed as a historical monument. Founded in 564, the monastery developed enormously in the following centuries, expanding its income and property by acquiring surrounding land. In 1382, the monastery passed to the Benedictine Order and became a place of rest and relaxation. The actual monastery, in the Mannerist style, dates from the 16th century, while the rest of the facilities were redesigned in the 17th century. In May 1834, the religious orders in Portugal were dissolved and all their property passed to the state. Since then, the monastery has had several owners.
