The Cistercian monastery with monastery church, founded in 1172, is the most famous building in the small town of Dargun. Until 1552, this monastery exerted considerable influence. Towards the end of the 16th century, the princes of the House of Mecklenburg-Güstrow took over the monastery and spent almost 200 years converting it into a palace.
The originally four-storey, plastered brick building was expanded to include an upper floor in 1585. Numerous remains of vaults can be found inside. On the western gable front, the remains of pointed arch windows with triple recesses are noteworthy.
After the town was occupied by the Red Army, the castle was set on fire by unknown assailants and burned down to the ground. With its open gallery walkways, Dargun Castle was one of the most impressive palace complexes in all of northern Germany.
