Quarzsand Quarry, Benken Nature Reserve

The fossil-rich quartz sand pit has been mined since its discovery in 1836. The forest had to be cleared several times to allow the quartz sand to be extracted further. In 1983, however, the exploitation of quartz sand had to be stopped because the government council rejected further requests for clearing. The factory facilities were dismantled in the same year and the basic area was prepared for reforestation. The 40 meter high quarry wall will be preserved as a geological outcrop of national importance. - In summer you can admire several species of gorse and orchid here. The light, reforested forest, mostly made of birch, is simply beautiful. - Several information boards explain various aspects of the nature reserve and the former quartz sand pit; the boards could do with a refresh, because many of the images are already too yellowed and unfortunately hardly recognizable.
