Přední Zvonková – Schöneben Road

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Beautiful stretch of road through the Green Belt (former Iron Curtain). Coming from the Czech Republic, the driveway towards Schöneben starts in Přední Zvonková (Vorderglöckelberg) in a south-westerly direction. The start is at the crossroads in the village. After an initial flat section, the first steep section is 1.5 kilometers long.
After a short flat section, head towards the border crossing, from there past the small chapel on the left side over a long left curve to the apex of Schöneben just before the high ropes course. Schöneben is a small high plateau with a hotel complex and a large parking lot for cross-country skiers. There are few views along the entire route. But nature is enchanting.

Schöneben Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Schöneben is located twenty kilometers southeast of the border triangle of Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria and connects the Czech region of South Bohemia (Jihočeský kraj) with the Austrian Mühlviertel. The pass is located on the ridge of the 120-kilometer-long mountain range of the Bohemian Forest (Šumava).
1.3 kilometers from the pass is the Alpenblick observation tower, which offers a view over the valley of the Große Mühl to Bavaria and, if the visibility is good, to the Alps. In winter, Schöneben is a cross-country skiing center. The Iron Curtain (1945–1990) not only led to two completely different cultures developing on the Czech and Austrian sides, but the differences are also remarkable in terms of landscape architecture and nature. The two regions are now slowly but steadily growing together again.
The characteristics of the pass are more like those of a roller mountain, although on the Austrian side things can get pretty tough with twelve percent gradients. The border crossing is closed to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, the road width on the Czech side is ideal for single-lane traffic. Car traffic is therefore rather low.

Ulrichsberg is a nice starting point for many tours in the upper Mühlviertel. The ascent from Schöneben starts here. Highly recommended!
