Durdle Door — natural limestone arch

Highlight • Natural Monument

Durdle Door is one of the most iconic landmarks in Dorset and one of the most well-known sights along the South West Coast Path. This magnificent natural limestone arch was formed when the power of the waves eroded the rock and forged a hole through the middle. The name Durdle is derived from an old English word ‘thirl’, which means to pierce, bore or drill.

There are brave ones who bathe here in January. Big advantage: You have the wonderful beach for yourself and many fans who would like to take a photo of you home.

White Nothe Cliffs

Highlight • Beach

Another stunning chalk headland to punctuate the stunning scenic running along the Southwest Coast Path. The top is at about 160m above the sea so you get stunning views to Portland in the West and back over Durdle Door to St Alban's Head in the east.
If you fancy a steep path and then a run on the beach take the nearby signed smugglers path that zig zags steeply down to the sea.

Fossil Forest, Lulworth Cove

Highlight • Natural Monument

The beach at the foot of Bindon Hill boasts the most complete fossil record of a Jurassic forest in the entire world. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its international significance, ‘Fossil Forest’ has lots of clearly visible fossils that are around 135 million years old. Look out for bowl-shaped stones, which are the remains of old trees and fossilised trunks.

Grange Hill Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Really steep hill. Nice climb and well worth it. However do check that the firing range doesn't mean that the road is closed, or else you'll be going back down straight away!
