Votive Temple to European Fraternity

Highlight • Religious Site

The Votive Temple to European fraternity dedicated to the fallen of all wars was designed starting from 1934 and solemnly inaugurated in 1983; on its bell tower stands the famous bell called Ave Plavis, donated for the occasion by the boys of '99 (fighters of the First World War).
The building has a crypt, in which the remains of the soldiers of each of the nations who fought in the Great War are kept. Inside a large organ by Andrea Zeni, from 2012.

Ascent to Castello San Salvatore (Susegana)

Highlight (Segment) • Castle

The castle of San Salvatore is an ancient fortified complex in Susegana, in the province of Treviso. The castle has a rather late origin: in 1245 the hill of San Salvatore was ceded by the municipality of Treviso to the counts of Collalto, who already boasted feudal rights over the neighboring county of the same name. Construction began between the late thirteenth century, fourteenth century and early fifteenth century. In 1312, when the castle was now completed, the Collaltos obtained from Henry VII full jurisdiction over the counties of Collalto and San Salvatore: it was the beginning of a principality which, although within the municipality of Treviso first and the Serenissima then, maintained very large autonomy until 1797, with the arrival of Napoleon.

Located at the foot of the Colle di San Salvatore, there is a church dedicated to the Madonna Annunziata, built in the eighteenth century (the first archive data is from 1775), which preserves inside a lunette depicting the Archangel Gabriel bringing the happy news to Our Lady.
Popular tradition has it that a cripple who lived in Susegana stopped in prayer in front of the image of the Annunciation on the wall of a house located right at the foot of the hill and obtained the grace of being able to walk. The news of the miracle spread quickly, prompting the Collalto family to build the church and place the miraculous sacred image there.

Church of Susegana

Highlight • Religious Site

The new parish church of Susegana, dedicated to the Visitation, was built together with the bell tower in the 15th century thanks to the interest of the Di Collalto lords. The First World War left this building with extensive damage, which was recovered together with some structural changes. The most important work preserved in the church of Susegana is the altarpiece depicting the sacred conversation with the Madonna and Child enthroned and the saints John the Baptist, Catherine of Alexandria, the prophet Daniel and Peter, an early work by Giovanni Antonio de' Sacchis, known as "Il Pordenone", built in 1516. Furthermore, on the wall of the left nave, there are remains of fifteenth-century frescoes, rediscovered during the restoration work begun in 1984.
