Wienerwald Lake

Highlight • Lake

The Wienerwaldsee, located 20 km west of Vienna, is a reservoir and the largest still body of water in the Wienerwald. It lies between the communities of Purkersdorf, Tullnerbach and Pressbaum. The lake, fed by the Wien River and the Wolfsgrabenbach, was used as a water reservoir until recently. The area is a water protection area, where swimming is forbidden in summer, as is ice skating in winter. Accordingly, the Wienerwaldsee has established itself as a habitat for a diverse flora and fauna. There are well-marked and well-maintained paths around the lake, which are popular with recreational athletes and walkers.

Wienerwaldsee Dam

Highlight • Structure

The Wienerwaldsee is a shallow reservoir, located 20 kilometres west of Vienna, Austria.
It is located just north of Austria's main motorway, the West Autobahn, between Tullnerbach and Neu-Purkersdorf. It was created over three years, 1895–1897, by damming the Wienfluss (The Wien) and letting it fill the valley behind. The area around the lake is a nature conservation area. On the northern shore, near the weir, stands the statue of Wilhelm Kress. He was an early pioneer of seaplanes and during testing one of his prototypes sank without trace after hitting debris on the surface. The long-distance Westbahn (Western Railway) runs along the northern shore of the lake.

Wienerwaldsee Dam

Highlight • Monument

The Wienerwaldsee dam is a structure that creates a shallow reservoir in the Vienna Woods. The lake is located 20 km west of Vienna and serves as a flood retention basin for the Vienna River and the Wolfsgrabenbach. The lake was built between 1895 and 1897 and was previously a useful and drinking water reservoir for the Wiental water pipeline. Today the lake is a water protection area and a popular destination for cyclists and walkers. On the northern bank there is a monument to Wilhelm Kress, who had an accident with his seaplane here in 1901.
