In Devon, a tropical coral reef was formed in a shallow sea at what is now the eastern edge of Hemers. Later, a mass of limestone developed from it, which today stretches from Wuppertal via Hagen and Hemer to Balve. Iron ore has been mined in today's nature reserve since the ninth century. Today the sea of rocks is largely covered by woodruff beech forest, which is home to the wood warbler, gray and green woodpecker, blindworms, the noctule bat, the water bat and many other animal species. Due to the calcareous soil, plant species such as sanicle, bird's nest arum and arum thrive here, which do not or hardly occur on the otherwise mostly acidic soils of South Westphalia.

The Old Hammer in Oberrödinghausen was mentioned in a document as early as 1751. It was founded by Max Theodor von Dücker and belonged to the “Rödinghauser Eisenfabrique”. The main items manufactured were grate bars and plowshares. The Rheinisch-Westfälische Kalkwerke AG used the hammer until it was shut down in 1955, most recently as a forge. The fountain, designed by artist Herbert Prause, moved from the paper factory to the Old Hammer in late autumn 2022.
