Cultural capital 2024 - Bad Ischl

The European Union has been awarding the title of Capital of Culture since 1985 with the aim of highlighting the richness and diversity of European cultures and strengthening Europeans' feeling for the common European culture.

On Tuesday, November 12, 2019, Minister of Culture Schallenberg announced the decision of the twelve-person jury (see link> bundeskanzleramt.gv.at), which had been preceded by a multi-year application process among 17 cities, at the Federal Chancellery in Vienna:

Bad Ischl and the Salzkammergut region, together with Estonia's second largest city Tartu and the Norwegian city of Bodo, will form the city trio in 2024. In Austria, Bad Ischl, together with 20 municipalities in the Salzkammergut, will become European Capital of Culture in 2024 and thus successor to Graz (2003) and Linz (2009).

St. Nicholas Parish Church, Bad Ischl

Highlight • Religious Site

The oldest documented mention of a church in Ischl dates back to 1320. It was re-consecrated by the bishop of the diocese of Passau, so it must have existed before then. According to a document from 1344, all ships loaded with salt that passed through the town of Lauffen near Ischl had to pay a fee to the Chürchen ze Sand Niclas ze Ischl. At that time, the Traun River was an important waterway for inland shipping. The former church stretched from the tower (which still exists today) to the east (to the current sacristy). The cemetery was located on the site of the current church.[2]

Bad Ischl was originally part of the parish of Bad Goisern and St. Nicholas was therefore a branch church. When the Reformation spread to the Salzkammergut and Goisern became Protestant, the independent parish of Ischl was created with the elevation of the parish on May 26, 1554 by Bishop Wolfgang of Passau. The abbess of the Traunkirchen monastery had the right to propose a priest to the bishop as pastor. When the women's monastery was dissolved in 1573, the bishop gave this right of presentation to the highest official in the Salzkammergut, the salt bailiff of Gmunden. From 1577 until the re-Catholicization in 1600, the pastors at St. Nicholas' Church were Evangelical Lutheran. In the course of the Counter-Reformation, from 1622 until its abolition in 1773, the Jesuits were given the right to propose pastors.[2]

In 1769/70, the old church was demolished, only the Gothic tower from 1490 remained.[3] The current sacred building was built between 1771 and 1780. Opposite, where a bank branch now stands, there was an emergency church during the construction period. The foundation stone was laid on May 1, 1771 by the Abbot of Lambach, Amandus Schickmayr. Empress Maria Theresa, as mistress of the Salzkammergut, donated 30,000 Austrian guilders to the building project. The total construction costs are likely to have been just over 40,000 guilders. The consecration of the church was carried out by Bishop Thomas Johann von Thun und Hohenstein on September 17, 1780. In 1797, a new tower clock was installed.[2]

From the 1820s onwards, Bad Ischl became a popular spa and bathing resort for the high aristocracy, which meant that donors and patrons were found for new altars and artistic wall paintings.[2]

Since the Emperor of Austria Franz Joseph I spent every summer in his imperial villa from 1854 onwards and attended the 7 a.m. mass every Sunday, St. Nicholas' Church was given the title of Imperial and Royal Court Parish Church. The pastors Franz Weinmayr (term of office 1870–1911) and Franz Stadler (term of service 1911–1936) received the title of Papal House Prelate from Rome, since the prelate was the "lowest" church rank, which was admitted to the imperial table according to the Spanish court ceremonial.[2]

Elisabeth Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Elisabeth Bridge in the imperial city is a true gem and a significant monument in the city's history. In 1899, the statue of the bridge's patron saint, John Nepomuk, was donated and ceremonially erected the following year. This elegant bridge majestically spans the Traun River towards Reiterndorf, offering visitors a picturesque view. The patron saint, known for his protective role, seems to watch over the flowing waters, lending the bridge a spiritual aura. Surrounded by idyllic nature, the Elisabeth Bridge is not only a thoroughfare but also a place of peace and contemplation, perfect for strolls or simply enjoying the beautiful panorama.

K & K Zauner Patisserie

Highlight • Cafe

The Zauner is an institution in Bad Ischl and known throughout Austria. Zuckergoscherl can indulge their vice here. Coffee and pastries are among the best that Austria has to offer in this area. Everything is recommendable, depending on your taste. Be sure to try the Zaunerkipferl and bring something with you for those who stayed at home, such as B. Zaunerstollen, Zaunerkipferl, Bishop's bread, Hedgehog, chocolate, Gugelhupf, confectionery ...
The service is courteous and considerate, the coffee, as I said, excellent, and the prices reasonable. Yes, and there are quiet times when you don't have to "fight" for a place.

Kurhaus in Bad Ischl Spa Park

Highlight • Monument

Park in the center of Bad Ischl.

The park was redesigned as part of the 2015 State Garden Show. There are nice shaded areas under the old trees and a new playground has been created for children.
The monuments to Franz Lehár and Emmerich Kalman are reminiscent of the silver era of operettas in the 20th century, and the Lehár Festival still takes place annually in the Kongress & TheaterHaus in the Kurpark. In the summer months, the music pavilion serves as a venue for open-air concerts.
