Bridgnorth Bridge

Highlight • Historical Site

Bridgnorth is beautifully perched atop a sandstone cliff with spectacular views of the Severn Valley. Being divided by the river gives off the impression of it being two towns really, a high town and a low town. It's a pretty place and has an interesting history going back to the English civil war and some more. Well worth a visit.

This curious set of holes and tunnels were dug into the soft sandstone during the Civil War in the 17th century when Bridgnorth was under siege by parliamentary forces. Having gained no ground during three weeks of fighting, the Parliamentarians dug the tunnels under St Mary's Church to blow up the Royalists supply of gunpowder which they stored there.

Bridgnorth Castle Ruins

Highlight • Monument

Bridgnorth Castle was founded in 1101-1102 by Robert de Belleme, Earl of Shrewsbury. It was a mighty fortress in its heyday but fell into a state of disrepair by 1281 and was nearly ruined by the time of Henry VIII's reign. In 1646, the castle was surrendered to Parliamentary troops following a three-week siege. The fortress was stripped and the walls were systematically mined and blown up. All that remains of the castle today is the severely listing tower keep. Bridgnorth Castle is a scheduled monument.
