Great Dun Fell Access Road

Highlight • Climb

Take it easy on the brakes, there's loose gravel in places. I reached 42 mph on way down

Great Dun Fell to Garrigill Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Bridleway section, slow going with some pushing but trending down hill. Wild and open. Good place for a wild camp. Lovely bit of river too before joining gravel road to Garrigill. It's the bit on the GBDuro film where Lachlan Morton is completely fed up...

Garrigill Village Green

Highlight • Settlement

The Cumbrian village of Garrigill is situated on the banks and close to the source of the River South Tyne.

The village is centred around a lovely green, framed with charming stone-built houses and buildings.

It's location is notable for being on both the Pennine Way (the oldest of the UK's National Trails) and the Sea to Sea Cycle Route (C2C) England's popular long-distance cycle route linking the east and west coast.

Climb to Greg's Hut Bothy

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

It's a stiff climb almost straight out of Garrigill before levelling off a bit - you can see the trail snaking its way ahead of you. It gets rougher the closer you get to the bothy, a small bit of pushing required for all but the strongest of riders. Just about doable on a gravel bike. Some good streams for bottle refills.

Greg's Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

At an altitude of 2,357 feet (718 m), Greg’s Hut is the highest bothy in England. Located close to Cross Fell, the highest point in the Pennines, this free-to-use cottage is helpfully situated in a remote part of the hills that's prone to bad weather.

There are basic facilities at the bothy and it makes for a good place for a lunch break or an overnight stop. For more information, visit gregshut.org.uk.

Kirkland Way Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

One of the ways up onto the escarpment'! Fit folks / MTB'ers will dust up the majority - It gets a little mossy 2/3 of the way up after the "hairpin". If its poor weather expect to sink and to be leathered by Mother Cumbria! Me - I love it when she hits me hard and im on my 42mm gravel tyres! Wicked Fun! Expect a little hikeabike!
