View across the Rosensee to the white bridge

Highlight • Viewpoint

The water quality varies greatly. In late summer, it sometimes smells fishy here, while in autumn the reservoir is covered in leaves.

Redder with mighty old oaks, the name may come from the fact that the deceased used to be brought there to the Preetz monastery church. However, one does not know exactly.

View over the Schwentine Valley

Highlight • Viewpoint

Slightly elevated vantage point with a great view of the Schwentine Valley. Here the river tends to overflow its banks when the water is high and flood the meadows.

Old Gatehouse at Preetz Abbey

Highlight • Monument

The former Benedictine convent with its church in Preetz is one of the most important cultural monuments in our region and a gem in the Plön district. It was founded in 1216 by Albrecht von Orlamünde in honor of the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist. Nuns of the Benedictine order, guided by the motto "ora et labora" (pray and work), led the convent to economic, intellectual, and cultural flourishing. Since the Reformation (1542), the convent has been owned by the Schleswig-Holstein knighthood, which transformed it into a women's foundation that still exists today, administered by the abbey council – the provost and prioress.

The Preetz Abbey is located 16 km southeast of Kiel in the Plön district, on the B76 – nestled in the idyllic Holstein Switzerland region.

The grounds of the Preetz Abbey are open to the public at all times – except for the abbey church, which can only be visited with a guided tour.

The monastery has existed here since 1261.

The monastery church was built between 1325 and 1340.

Gut Rastorf

Highlight • Historical Site

Good Rastorf is a world apart, between forest and meadows, an estate that was first documented in the 13th century and, apart from minor interruptions, for over 600 years the Rantzaus heard, a family that counts to the Holstein Uradel from Governor of the Danish kings, diplomats and politicians.
Architecturally, Gut Rastorf is one of the flagship properties of Schleswig-Holstein, thanks to its pretty late Baroque style court buildings. They were, as well as the classicistic mansion, damaged in the Second World War by bombs, but then rebuilt by Christiane's father Kuno Graf zu Rantzau with great effort and attention to detail.
