Altes Land Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

The Altes Land Museum has been located in the building at Westerjork 49 since 1990.

The house is a typical example of the Altländer Fachhallenhaus (traditional half-timbered house), measuring 35 m long, 17 m wide, and 12 m high. The museum presents the development of the Altes Land and the lives of its inhabitants on an exhibition area of 320 m².

The house's eventful history began more than 280 years ago when it was still located at the end of the village. The former farm encompassed more than 25 acres.

But its owner ran into financial difficulties, and in 1821, bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against the farm, and the farm was sold into 19 parcels.

Thus, a farm story that began in Westerjork in 1524 came to an end.

Johann Mählmann acquired the building, completely demolished the house, which had been destroyed by a storm, and rebuilt it in 1825 on the foundations of the house at Westerjork 49.
The gable remained almost completely intact, and the ground floor was remodeled to meet the needs of its residents.
After 1978, the house was no longer inhabited and fell into disrepair.
In 1983, the fire department even had to demolish the rear section of the hall.

Once again, the house was a ruin.

The house was discovered by local children as a spooky playground,
because the house had long been considered a haunted house.

The Altländer Sparkasse (Sparkasse) acquired the ruins from the municipality of Jork for a symbolic 1 DM
and, together with the municipality, developed a utilization concept that made it possible to utilize public funding.

Since 1990, the house has served as a museum of Altländer history. The converted attic is used for exhibitions, concerts, and other events.
Next to the museum stands a drive-through barn, which was rebuilt in 2001, and today the ensemble once again includes a complete farmstead with a house, barn, and an Altländer gate.
The drive-through barn shares a similar fate to the main building.
Its original location was in Huttfleth, in the neighboring community of Steinkirchen. The barn was built in 1590 and is the oldest surviving outbuilding in the Altes Land region.

On the way from Horneburg to the Elbe, you will pass many renovated fruit farms. It is not only in the Guderhand district that the old farmhouses testify to the wealth and pride of the old fruit growers.

A wonderful rest area has been created here on Jorker Chaussee in the Höhenweg area. Absolutely everything has been thought of here. There's a portable toilet, bike racks, a roof over your head, and beautiful nature all around. A rest stop is highly recommended 👍.
