What to expect on Mineral King Valley – Monarch Lake loop from Disney Lot
The journey begins with a steep, exposed ascent through brush-covered hillsides, quickly rewarding you with panoramic views of the East Fork Kaweah River Valley and Vandever Mountain. As you climb, the terrain shifts into a more lush environment, winding through meadows bursting with wildflowers and damp forests of red fir. The highlight is undoubtedly the picturesque Monarch Lakes, nestled in a dramatic cirque beneath Sawtooth and Mineral Peaks, their shimmering blue waters framed by vibrant red and orange metamorphic rock. This trail demands good fitness due to its sustained climbs and high altitude, making it best suited for confident hikers.
Planning your visit
The trail starts from the Disney Lot, also known as the Sawtooth Trailhead, in the Mineral King Valley. It's highly recommended to start your hike early, especially during summer, as the initial exposed slopes can become very hot. Be aware that marmots are known to chew on vehicle parts in the parking area, so take precautions. Always carry sufficient water, as reliable sources along the trail are not guaranteed, and hiking at altitudes above 7,500 feet is inherently demanding.
