French Tower (Tour de France), Rhodes Harbour

Highlight • Castle

This imposing defence construction at the medieval harbour of Rhodes dates from 1451. As many as 13 windmills had reportedly functioned in this area at the time of the Knightly rule, catering to the needs of the city. Works on the development of this particular construction were originally commissioned by Grand Master Jean de Lastic (1437-1454), using funds contributed partly by the local Jewish community and the King of France – possibly Louis XI, judging from a blazon featured on the tower’s façade. The original outlook and structure of the tower and the bastion are now gone, altered forever in the wake of modifications commissioned by Grand Master d’Aubusson, in the aftermath of the Ottoman siege of 1480 as well as under the effect of posterior reinstatement works carried about the bastion.

The historic old town is characterized by many gates, most of which are accessible free of charge. The Saint Pauls Gate is adjacent to the Freedom Gate.
Built in the second half of the 15th century, it was completely destroyed in World War II and rebuilt in 1951 along with the Marine Gate

Fort of St. Nicholas, Rhodes

Highlight • Castle

Saint Nicholas Fort is located at the end of an ancient mole in Mandraki area, inside the harbour of Rhodes. It is the first fortified tower a traveller will meet when entering the harbour. Due to its strategic position it was subject to the most brutal attacks during both sieges, as whoever could capture this Fort would more or less gain control of the harbour.

It was originally constructed as a relatively small round tower of a diameter a little wider than 17 meters in 1465 by Grand Master Pedro Raymondo Zacosta and was adorned with a relief of Saint Nicholas (patron Saint of the sea travellers) and the Coats of Arms of Master Zacosta and the Duke of Burgundy who had financed the construction.

The Tower was severely damaged during the siege of 1480 but was restored and fortified with a solid outwork (bastion) by Master Pierre d’ Aubusson, who finally converted it into a powerful fort. A small chapel in favour of St. Nicholas had also been built inside the protective bastion.

Site of the Colossus of Rhodes

Highlight • Historical Site

In ancient times, the Colossus of Rhodes is said to have stood above the harbor entrance. The approximately 30 m high bronze figure, which depicted the sun god Helios, was known as one of the seven wonders of the world. He was probably born in the 3rd century. destroyed by an earthquake before Christ.

Church of the Virgin of the Burgh Ruins

Highlight • Religious Site

The ruins of this Gothic Roman Catholic church are inside the medieval town, near the Gate of the Virgin. The church dates from the 14th century and was most likely one of the first buildings erected by the knights. During the Turkish occupation of Rhodes, the Ottomans converted the church into a mosque. Not much remains today due to the bombings of World War II. Only the three apses and parts of the small chapel have survived. However, it is an important monument as there are few other Roman Catholic churches from this period left on the islands. Fun Fact: The name "Burgh" comes from the commoners (as opposed to the knights) who inhabited this part of town

May 15, 2024,Wanderung um und durch die Altstadt von Rhodos
Today my goal was to walk around the historic old town and the Grand Master's Palace in the moat between the two walls.
The harbor entrance is guarded by a doe and a stag standing on stone pillars. They are considered a symbol of the 🏝island.
The tour between the two walls seemed never-ending, but it was interesting.
After I …

A tour through the old town of Rhodes Town. As expected, it is very touristy. There are many narrow and beautiful streets with small shops to see. The massive stone walls, churches, mosques and city gates are very impressive. The many small and large squares are also beautiful, where trees mostly provide shade and taverns invite you to linger.

A holiday on Rhodes certainly includes a visit to the capital on the northern tip of the island, whose medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Surrounded by a large and well-preserved city wall. The Rittergasse and the Grand Master's Palace are well-known. In the old City
souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes line up next to each other. …

The beautiful alleys of Rhodes Town. Even though we've been here six times, we keep discovering new shops and alleys.

Today we were on Rhodes. There we lay directly in front of the wonderful old town, which we walked through extensively. We particularly liked the "walk on the walls", a 1.5 km long path on the city wall. The Acropolis of Rhodes, on the other hand, was completely scaffolded and not really great 😀

Immediately after breakfast through the alleys of the old town.
Simply wonderful😍

A very nice city tour with a walk along the city walls and back underneath. Afterwards, we went to the old town of Rhodes (tourist area). We had a great meal at the small restaurant MANGO. Highly recommended, beer €2.50, and the food was excellent 👍🏽😊
