Ellenbogen

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Lister Ellenbogen is the northernmost point of Sylt and therefore Germany. It is only four kilometers away from the Danish North Sea island of Rømø - which can be clearly seen when the weather is nice.
The peninsula, which is between 330 and 1,200 meters narrow and 4,500 meters long, belongs to the Listland community of owners and is therefore privately owned. To drive along the Lister Ellenbogen by car, you have to pay a toll or you can explore what is probably the most beautiful part of Sylt on foot or by bike, all free of charge.
The entire Ellenbogen is a huge bird and nature reserve, home to a rich biodiversity of birds, sheep and seals. Jürgen-Wolf Diedrichsen's free-roaming sheep generally have the right of way here. In the middle of the picturesque protected area is the surfing spot Königshafen, which magically attracts kite and wind surfers. This is an ideal area for newcomers to surfing, but veteran surfers also get their money's worth.

Thatched roof houses are a distinctive feature of the island of Sylt and give the village of Kampen in particular a distinctive charm. These traditional Frisian houses are covered with reeds, which not only gives them a distinctive look, but also provides excellent thermal insulation and protects them from the stormy North Sea winds.

Kampen, known as an exclusive and stylish destination, is home to many of these thatched roof houses. These houses are often designed in a classic Frisian style, characterized by white walls and large, often green shutters. They are not only an architectural highlight, but also an important part of the region's cultural heritage. The protection and preservation of these buildings is ensured by strict building regulations and restoration measures to preserve their historical and aesthetic significance.

The thatched roof houses in Kampen and other parts of Sylt such as Keitum and Archsum are often available as holiday homes or luxurious private apartments. These houses offer a cozy and authentic atmosphere and are very popular with tourists, which is why early booking is often necessary.

For visitors, a stroll through Kampen offers a wonderful opportunity to admire these beautiful houses and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the place. These houses are particularly impressive in the evening light, when the low sun bathes the thatched roofs in warm light.

View of the Kampen Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

There are two lighthouses in Kampen on Sylt, including the well-known "Red Cliff". This has served as an important navigational aid for sea travel for many years. It is not only a functional building, but also a popular photo motif and a symbol of the island of Sylt. The lighthouse has a significant impact on the landscape of the region and attracts numerous visitors every year who want to enjoy the picturesque view of the North Sea and the surrounding nature.

Listland Wandering Dune

Highlight • Natural Monument

Most of the dunes are planted today so they can not move. An exception is Listland, where today is the only and last moving dune in Germany. Due to the constant westerly winds, the unvegetated sand mountains are blown further and further to the east. The largest of the dunes moves up to seven meters a year.

Sun, clouds, a tailwind, a headwind, and delicious food at the Lister soup stand. Homemade soups, three to choose from today—if they're all there, they're all there. From the Kupferkanne (copper pot), Kampen cakes, huge slices, also homemade, and coffee roasted through the copper pot. Along the way, we learned a bit about geography.

Little interesting tour. Bad roads on the dunes, bumpy road. The note "road damage" makes it rather amusing...potholes follow badly "repaired" humps. I wished for a gravel road, or just nature trails.

🚲 With overcast skies, first to the train station. I still need a seat reservation for my return journey 🚅 to MUC. Then north from Sylt via Wenningstedt and Kampen through the dunes. The Weststrandstraße to the entrance of the toll road to Ellenbogen. The Weststrandstraße is of poor quality. The Ellenbogen area and Listland are privately owned by a …

Off to the northernmost point of Germany. I chose the best weather... drizzle and rain. Briefly up the dune at Uwe. And on. The last 1...2 km you have to walk through the dunes. Beautiful beach. Unfortunately Denmark is not visible. And back again soaked. Eat a fish sandwich in List to gain strength and then carry on. The hiking …

At some point we lost count of how many showers hit us today, but every time there was a fat rainbow. The wind that came from the west today challenged us the most on the way back. But man gets used to it😜.
Train traffic was stopped today in northern Germany due to sabotage of the radio system, which was …

So, today finally started the day with sunshine. It was also necessary because it was the longest of our stages. From Westerland via Wenningstedt, Kampen on the elbow and back via List. To drive the route, over large parts of a former railway line, great. Small downer: today it blew a lot on the way back. But a grandiose backdrop …

ESC: a nice tour to the northernmost point of the island. The cycle path is mostly good, the view is always magnificent. After a little more than half the route you can fortify yourself in List, although if you are not a Gosch fan it will be difficult to find anything😉.

Very nice bike ride from Wenningstedt through the dunes, past the UweDüne and the lighthouse. Then circle around to the end with and then to the northernmost point of Germany and back
