The formerly small fishing and farming town of Wittenberge in Prignitz had modest predecessor churches: the foundations of the church from the time of the city's founding in the 13th century were discovered in 1997. In a devastating city fire in 1652, the church was destroyed by the flames. The rebuilt church also burned down in 1757.
