The Selz rises as a small brook near Orbis. On its way it flows through the two districts of Alzey-Worms and Mainz-Bingen. After about 63 km it flows into the Rhine at Ingelheim.
Its catchment area of 375km² is characterized by a warm, dry climate with annual rainfall of around 500mm.
Despite its low, often irregular water flow, the Selz is considered to be the collecting artery of the low-precipitation Rhine-Hessian hill country. At medium and low water levels, the runoff consists to a considerable extent of purified sewage treatment plant drains. The water quality has improved significantly in recent years. The bottom of the water body is heavily silted up as a result of the high levels of suspended matter from the floods from runoff in the catchment area.
