Weilburg Ship Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

The Weilburg Shipping Tunnel is the oldest and longest navigable ship tunnel in Germany. 1] It passes under a length of 195 meters the Mühlberg, on which the city Weilburg is located, from north to south, thus avoiding a two-kilometer-long arch of the Lahn with two weirs. The tunnel was built between 1844 and 1847 and today forms, together with the parallel road and rail tunnels, the so-called Weilburg tunnel ensemble.

Weilburg Ship Tunnel and Lock

Highlight • Structure

The only still passable ship tunnel in Germany with a length of almost 200 meters passes under the old town of Weilburg. Opened in 1847, it soon lost its economic importance for shipping. As I discovered a few years ago, going in a canoe is a real experience.

Tip: On the right hand side of the crane tower, a path leads to a nearby lookout point with a bench, which in my view offers the nicer atmosphere. The monument of local historian Christian Spielmann is also located there.

Weilburg's former water supply, constructed as a chain bridge, is still firmly anchored in the minds of Weilburgers more than 60 years after its end of use. The people of Weilburg often still affectionately call the footbridge, now known as the Ernst–dienstbach-Steg, the Chain Bridge.

The Landtor forms the entrance to Weilburg's old town. Pink Lahn marble was used in the upper area of the gate during the renovation in 2001.
