Estaing

Highlight • Settlement

Estaing, this beautiful village is connected to the former president of the French republic Valéry Giscard D'Estaing (president from 1974 to 1981). In 2005, he bought the town's medieval castle. It is a homecoming for him, as well as a tribute to his ancestors, because this castle symbolized generations of soldiers and monks to whom Valéry Giscard d'Estaing was related.

Saint Fleuret Church in Estaing

Highlight • Religious Site

Originally a priory was built in Estaing, successively dependent on the Saint-Amans monastery of Rodez, then in 1080 on the Saint-Victor abbey in Marseille and in 1087, on the Notre-Dame-de-l' abbey. Assumption of Montsalvy2. Rare remains (a sculpted stone and a wall in the crypt) unearthed in the western part of the current church bear witness to this2.

On the foundations of this former priory the current church was built in the 15th century, first dedicated to Saint Amans3, first bishop of Rodez in the 5th century. It was subsequently placed under the patronage of Saint Fleuret, bishop who died in Estaing in the 7th century3. In the 16th century a funeral chapel was built to the south for the lords of Estaing2. The crypt, transformed into an ossuary in the 17th century, was emptied of the bones which were transferred to the new cemetery in 18922.

Against the choir, at the south-east corner, a sacristy was added in the 19th century. In 2008, work allowed easy access to the crypt for visits, it having previously been accessible by a trapdoor from nave2.

The church has been listed as a historic monument since December 29, 19274.

Estaing Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The pilgrimage bridge dating back to 1520 leads to the village, one of the most beautiful villages of the Aveyron. The houses of Estaing are close together in the small alleys around the former castle of the once influential d'Estaing family. The name of d'Estaing and the castle were bought in 1922 by the family Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (French President of the Szas of 1974-81).
