Wesselburen was built on two mounds in marshland, which were inhabited over 1000 years ago, and grew into a larger settlement over time. According to archaeological findings, the central village mound dates from the 8th to 9th century and was continuously raised. On May 7, 1281, the place was first mentioned in a document, as Hamburg and Dithmarschen concluded a non-aggression pact in Mehldorf. Even then, the place had the structure it has today: Starting from the highest point, where the church is located, the main streets radiate outwards from the historic town center.

After Wesselburen lost its independence from the peasant republic of Dithmarschen in 1559, the town flourished.
