In 1918, when Poland regained its independence, the market was renamed Freedom Square. In 1930, a monument to Tadeusz Kocciuszko was erected in the center of the square. After the annexation of Lodz by the Third Reich, the German occupation authorities of Lodz destroyed the monument on November 11, 1939, and the square was renamed Freedom Square, and in 1940, Germany Square. After the war, the monument was rebuilt in the same form in 1960. In 2022, the reconstruction of the square began. As part of the work, among other things, the tram traffic was completely moved to the north side of the square, the circular traffic around the monument was liquidated, trees were planted.
