Leonora Christina Ulfeldt (* July 8, 1621 at Frederiksborg Palace near Copenhagen; † March 16, 1698 at Maribo Monastery, Denmark) was a daughter of the Danish King Christian IV and Countess of Schleswig-Holstein, who also became known as a writer. She was imprisoned as a political prisoner for 22 years because of her alleged involvement in the intrigues of her husband Corfitz Ulfeldt. During this time she began writing her autobiography, Jammers Minde, which chronicles her deprived captivity. Striking features of the harrowing prison memoirs are the realistic description of her prison life and the impressive portrayal of her as a proud, faithful and indomitable woman who, after a crisis, finds her faith in God's grace and, knowing this, endures her long prison life patiently and with a certain sense of humour. Jammers Minde is considered the most important prose work in Danish literature of the 17th century. In addition, Leonora Christina wrote a second autobiography, called Den franske selvbiografi because of the French language used, which describes her life from childhood to imprisonment.

Friedrich VII Karl Christian was the second and only surviving son (his elder brother died on the day he was born) of the then Hereditary Prince Christian Friedrich, later King Christian VIII of Denmark, and his first wife Princess Charlotte Friederike zu Mecklenburg, the youngest daughter of Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg. His parents' marriage ended in divorce in 1810 after his mother had an affair with her singing teacher, the court musician Jean Baptiste Édouard Du Puy. Friedrich never saw his mother again. In 1815 his father married Caroline Amalie von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg, with whom he had no further children. As the successor of his cousin Friedrich VI. Christian Friedrich was little involved in politics and devoted himself to science and art together with his second wife. During his father's travels, Friedrich stayed in Copenhagen and was educated by teachers chosen by his uncle.
