Church of Saints Mamete and Agapito

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of S. Mamete is dedicated to saints Mamete and Agapito. It has a beautiful 11th-century Romanesque bell tower that was once detached from the body of the church.
On the outside of the building you can see the signs of the various changes made over time. On the side facing the lake there are frescoes of some coats of arms of Milanese archbishops, Lords of Valsolda. Inside, the church has a single nave with four side chapels. Behind the main altar there is an ancient painting depicting the Madonna and Child with San Mamete, but the view is blocked by the altar itself. On the two sides of the presbytery there are two scenes from the life of S. Mamete: the capture by Alessandro's soldiers and the death in the furnace, executed by the painter Salvatore Pozzi of Puria. The chapels on the left depict: a Pieta with St. Peter martyr and St. Dominic and in the other various representations of the guardian angel. The chapel is an interesting example of illusionistic painting.

In the chapels on the right we find: an altar of the Madonna and in the other a canvas with the marriage of the Virgin. At the entrance to the churchyard, there is an ossuary on the facade of which discolored decorations can be seen.

St. Bartholomew's Church, Loggio

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of San Bartolomeo, founded in 1362, is located halfway between the hamlets of Loggio and Drano on a hill overlooking the Soldo valley, so as to be equidistant from the two towns. Accessible from the road that continues to Puriatramite a double mini-flight of stairs, the church underwent various renovations, the last of which in 1736, when the new sacristy was erected and the bell tower was raised on top of which a golden sphere was placed. with pure gold from Turin.
The dedication to St. Bartholomew implies, it is believed, a link with the leather tanning business of which St. cloak, one's own skin (see for example the famous statue of San Bartolomeo in the Milan Cathedral).
On the counter-façade, a large fresco with the "Triumph of the Eucharist", a very current theme at that time because the Protestant reform had suppressed this sacrament. The author of the fresco, Gian Battista Pozzi, had taken as a model a famous tapestry by Rubens (a famous 17th century painter) on the same subject, existing in Turin at the court of the Savoy.
Above the 1st altar on the left there is again the Holy Shroud called in popular language "the Holy Shroud", for which mass was celebrated on May 4th.
The 2nd chapel on the right, called "dei Morti" as it was established by the ancient confraterita of the same name, refers to the Ossuary located on the side of the access to the churchyard, richly frescoed but in poor condition, and to the funeral tapestry, consisting of 12 sheets rectangular blacks painted in silver and colors: there are represented as many skeletons wrapped in the clothes that characterize their worldly role. These vestments are no longer exhibited, while on the feast day of San Bartolomeo (August) you can admire the precious red damask vestments embroidered in pure gold, a gift from the Mossini family.
On the hill overlooking the lake, south of Loggio beyond the so-called "campó" basin, is the cemetery and, next to it, the chapel dedicated to San Carlo, built on the occasion of his canonization (1610).

Loggio Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

It can be reached by following the mule track that connects the hamlet of Loggio to Puria.
Starting from the Church of San Bartolomeo di Loggio, continue up the ancient church until you cross a stone bridge that overlooks the Solda stream. Leave the mule track to go up the right side of the stream until you reach the waterfall in a few minutes.
