Raier Moos Nature Trail

Highlight • Trail

Raier Moos - a scenic gem - saved over time. About 12,000 years ago: a lake fed by springs forms in a rock hollow cut out by the glacier. At »Waldelebichl« the first aborigines settle and build pile dwellings. Later, the lake sands, also as a result of water discharges. In 1986, the moor is partially dredged again. To ensure the protection of the biotope, constant care is necessary.

On the circular route, you will experience valuable small habitats with their own flora and fauna: lush hedges, location-typical corridor trees and tree stands, reading stone walls, flowery dry lawns, scattered meadows in various color aspects, quacking frogs and swirling dragonflies by the pond.

Ölberg viewpoint and picnic area

Highlight • Viewpoint

These rocky hills south of Natz are characterized by glacial erosion, dry grass areas on a thin layer of soil, shrub and sometimes tree cover, and chestnut deposits and therefore have an extremely large habitat diversity in relation to the area. Due to their immediate proximity to the town of Natz, they are also of considerable importance for local recreation. The hill areas are easily accessible via a short walk (cloister with a wayside shrine on the hill of the Schneiderhausbühel) and there is a barbecue area at the foot of the Mount of Olives.

Sommersürs Biotope

Highlight • Natural

The Somersürs biotope, formerly called Samesirs, lies in a valley between the hamlet of Viums and Natz on the plateau of Natz-Schabs north of Brixen. The biotope area of just over 2 hectares was created through the renaturation of a peat mining area from the 1970s.

Over the past few decades, some open water areas with island-like reeds and cattails have developed. Together with a diverse underwater vegetation and numerous different shrubs in the marginal zones, this is an ideal habitat for numerous animal and plant species.

The ponds still serve as water reservoirs for a nearby brick factory, but for ecological reasons the water withdrawal is strictly regulated.
