Spitzbunker 1939/40 (Carl-Schenck-Ring) - Darmstadt 🚴‍♂️

Highlight • Monument

Pointed Bunker 1939/40 (Carl-Schenck-Ring) - Darmstadt 🚴‍♂️

In Darmstadt, there are still four pointed bunkers built in the years before World War II. On the site of the former Deutsche Bahn repair shop in the area of Frankfurter Straße, Carl-Schenck-Ring, and Sensfelder Weg, popularly known as "Knell," there are two pointed bunkers of the "Winkel" type, which were probably built between 1939 and 1940 in preparation for the impending air war to protect the Reichsbahn employees.

Leo Winkel (1885-1981) was a German architect known, among other things, for his pointed bunker-style air raid shelters. This type of construction was registered by the Reich Patent Office in 1934.
The Darmstadt Towers are exceptionally large, with 15 floors and a floor thickness of approximately three meters. The outer walls of the two pointed-cylindrical bunkers are made of approximately two-meter-thick reinforced concrete walls; inside, a shallow ramp spirals around a central spindle. Original relics such as numbered wooden benches, inscriptions on the concrete walls, ventilation pipes, measuring instruments, and toilet facilities provide an authentic insight into the era of World War II. One such bunker provided shelter for 530 people. In addition to the two pointed bunkers, the site also features a shallow shelter built for the protection of the personnel, which also retains numerous original wartime features. 🚴‍♂️

Arheilger Mühlchen

Highlight • Lake

Arheilger Mühlchen - Swimming Lake 🚴‍♂️

The Arheilger Mühlchen is located in the Ruthsenbach green belt. The lake has a water surface area of 14,800 m², with an average water depth of 2.20 m. The natural swimming lake has been used as a public swimming pool since 1924. In 2015, the Arheilger Mühlchen was listed as a historical monument.
Until 1843, the lake was leased to the miller Vöglin. After that, it became privately owned. In 1854, it was drained and subsequently used as a meadow. A few years later, the former lake was flooded again. The Arheilger Mühlchen remains privately owned to this day. The lake was originally called Unterer Arheilger Teich, Unterer Arheilger Woog, and Unterer Woog. The name Arheilger Mühlchen refers to a former neighboring grain mill. Herons and other waterfowl can often be seen in the Arheilger Mühlchen's water lily-covered foreshore. The European pond turtle is also native. The park has an old stand of trees.

Steinrodsee Recreation Area – Gräfenhausen

Lake Steinrodsee is located in Gräfenhausen, a district of the Hessian town of Weiterstadt near Darmstadt, and is a popular recreation area.
The lake was created in the 1930s during the industrial mining of sand and gravel for the construction of the Frankfurt am Main-Darmstadt Reichsautobahn (now the Federal Autobahn 5). After this use ended, the lake area was converted into a recreational center and used as a swimming lake. As the number of bathers increased and the lake threatened to silt, swimming was discontinued. After extensive desilting in 1992, swimming was no longer permitted, and the area was designated a quiet recreation area.
The lake, home to numerous fish species, covers 12 hectares and is approximately 4 meters deep. Next to Lake Steinrodsee is the "Fischerhütte" (fishing hut) (a place for refreshments), a campsite for short-term and long-term campers, and a fishing park with an artificial lake. There's also a large beer garden, a playground, and some animals in the outdoor enclosure. 🚴‍♂️
