View of Dover Port, White Cliffs, and Dover Castle

Highlight • Beach

With the White Cliffs, the busy port, the English Channel and all manner of other interesting things, this part of Dover is quite extraordinary. Peeking out above the cliffs is the top of Dover Castle, a place well worth visiting too.

The North Downs Way ends here as well, or begins, depending on which way you hike.

The North Downs Way is a fantastic, long-distance hike route through the gorgeous countryside of Surrey and Kent. It takes you to sweeping panoramas, vibrant nature reserves and past countless historic relics. It ends/begins here on Dover's seafront and is marked with a gateway of sorts and a line.

Whether you're beginning or ending here, it's an impressive location with some serious grandeur to it.

The White Cliffs of Dover

Highlight • Natural Monument

The White cliffs of Dover are one of the most famous English landmarks, and can be viewed by everyone reaching Britain's mainland via the English Channel. The visitor centre (open daily from 11am to 4pm, closed on holidays) offers free maps, and a gift and coffee shop.

South Foreland Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

Starting in 1635 as a couple of iron braziers to hold fires, this site has been used to protect sailors from Goodwin Sands for nearly 400 years. As one of the first lighthouses to use electricity as well as being a test site for early shipborne radio, we have South Foreland to thank for some huge innovations in maritime safety.

A great hike unfortunately a little more people than we like hiking.
The absolute highlight and must is the descent to the beach.
