Juniper Hiking Trail on the Jurasteig — View of Hohenburg Castle Ruins

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The castle is now unveiled.
The section of the route from the Jurasteig is very easy to walk and leads across nutrient-poor grassland and juniper heaths along the exposed slope, simply wonderful.

Very easy to walk with very nice views. Partly it goes directly through an open wild hedge.

Hohenburg Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The ruin lies on a mountain above the Hohenburg market on the site of the US military training area Hohenfels. Therefore, it officially belongs to the municipality of Hohenfels in the Neumarkt district, not to the Hohenburg market in the Amberg / Sulzbach district. The castle ruins can be reached via a path that starts in the Hohenburg market directly behind the fire station. The castle was built around 1000 in the then Nordmark by the Counts of Hohenburg as a border county, it is one of the oldest castle foundations (probably around 1050, Count Ernst and his wife Pilifrid) in the Nordgau, today's Upper Palatinate. It protected an important medieval trade route. It was not until 1115 that a count Ernst was named in a document, this time expressly "von Hohenburg". burgseite.de/html/hohenburg.html

I can't say anything about the inn, we didn't stop in. The outside area looked very nice though. I can well imagine coming again in the summer.
What I can say is that right next to it is a great outdoor stable with cows, sheep with lambs and a donkey. Just nice to watch.

The Lauterach

The Lauterach rises in the area of the Lauterhofen market in the Upper Palatinate Jura from two springs, the Lauterbrunnen and the Ziegelbrunnen. The Lauterach flows in a southeasterly direction through the districts of Neumarkt and Amberg-Sulzbach. Surrounded by forestry and agricultural areas, it crosses the towns of Lauterhofen, Pfaffenhofen, Kastl, Ransbach, Allersburg, Hohenburg, Adertshausen and Schmidmühlen.
The Lauterach's tributaries are the Mühlhauser Bach, the Weihermühlbach, the Hausener Bach and the Taubenbach, as well as a number of dry valleys that do not always have water.
From the source to the mouth, the Lauterach overcomes a height difference of around 128 m with an above-ground catchment area of approx. 327.2 km² and a total length of around 34.8 km.
To protect the town of Schmidmühlen from flooding from the Lauterach, a flood protection system was built by the Upper Palatinate district and put into operation in 2008.
It was only marginally straightened and is therefore still structurally rich. Together with the Hausener Bach, the Lauterach is classified as a priority water for fish faunism.

October 7, 2023,🥾 Allersburg - Hohenburg - Burgruine Hohenburg 🏰
Today we went from Allersburg to Hohenburg to the Hohenburg castle ruins.
A fantastic view awaited us, but unfortunately the weather wasn't great today, cloudy and cold...
Still a nice tour, back to the car we went through Hohenburg itself, this town looks more like a ghost town, almost every second house is lost...

Today's tour took @Stefan and me to the Lauterachtal - from Allersburg we went along the Lauterachtal cycle path to Hohenburg up to the ruins there and then back on the other side of the valley via the Hufiweg, juniper and Jura trails on the grassy slope.

Had a great tour with @Stoapfalzb(h)iker today. We ventured into the "danger area military training area" and were rewarded with a fantastic view.

The next 'we meet in the middle' holiday. Father's Day this year before Mother's Day.
The weather forecast didn't lie and the weather turned out to be beautiful.

Already on the journey I noticed a few vehicles full of men, although I couldn't tell if they were fathers 🤪.

Beautiful 10 km loop on the Jurasteig with a detour to the Hohenburg castle ruins, which are located in the Hohenfels military training area. A visit is possible at your own risk.
At the end there was a wonderful cooling off for the tired feet...... T-shirt weather on March 8th 👍😎🌞

With the sunshine you just have to get out! Something "easy" today. The tour is done once with and once without the castle. A castle is a must!
The tour was interesting. Lots of sun, through the Jura region with lots of great pine trees. The fortified church was also something. It was added without further ado.
I have to …
