Wire Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal

The Kennet and Avon Canal stretches from Bristol to London and marks a mostly straight line across the width of the country. There are plenty of stunning sections of footpath alongside the canal, and this is one of the many pretty locks.

Just outside Hungerford, Wire Lock is a perfect example of a wooden lock gate. You'll often see colourful narrow boats here too, the icing on the cake to such lovely surroundings.

At Marsh Benham, the Kennet and Avon canal passes through Hamstead Lock, a pretty section of the canal with a bench overlooking the water. It makes a nice picnic or rest spot. If you head north a few hundred metres up Milkhouse Road you'll also find the Red House pub.
