Château du Wineck

Highlight • Castle

Essentially, only part of the tower remains of the ruins, and you can't even enter the ruins. Still, it's a nice little ruin to include in your plans. It's easy to combine with the larger ruins of Schöneck and Windeck, or even the Maginot Line.

Waldi' refuge

Highlight • Other

The shelter (French: 'Abri') was rebuilt in September 2025 and named 'Waldi,' as I learned from a knowledgeable local hiking guide. This new type of shelter was designed by the Club Vosgien Niederbronn-les-Bains; plans can be requested from them. During the day, a maximum of 15 people can sit and rest here (inside and outside combined). If necessary, the two wide benches in the fairly sheltered interior offer (at least!) two very comfortable sleeping places. A long-distance hiker's dream 😍

Hopefully, Waldi will be found in more places in the forest in the future! This (legal) multiple use of shelters is long overdue in Germany, too.

Both from this meadow and from the Rue du Wittberg you have a beautiful view of the ruins of Petit Arnsbourg.

Obersteinbach

Highlight • Restaurant

Very nice little place on the German-French border with two little churches, some inns and great old half-timbered and red sandstone buildings.

Very tasty goat cheese, honey, jams, wine, snacks and even goat cheese ice cream.

The goats can be viewed in the stable next door.

Schoeneck Castle

Highlight • Castle

A very well-explained castle complex, which is divided into several stages and, with its illustrations from the various phases of destruction, provides a good insight into late medieval life and fortifications.
