Préfecture du Nord

Highlight • Historical Site

Construction of the prefecture began in 1865 and was completed in 1905.
The building was designed by architect Charles Marteau.
It is built in a neoclassical style with elements of the French Renaissance.
The prefecture is located on the north side of Place de la République, opposite the Palais des Beaux-Arts.
The prefecture serves as the administrative center for the region and the department, where various government departments and civil servants work.
The building is a historical monument and has been listed as a protected site since 1975.

Fountain of Solidarity

Highlight • Other

In the center of the Place de la Solidarité stands an iconic sculpture depicting a Möbius strip. The work, titled "Fontaine de la Solidarité," is by Marco Slinckaert (1943-2009), one of the first French artists to incorporate digital technology and computers into his work.
He also designed this work using a computer and commissioned Inoxi France, a company based in Roubaix, to produce it.
Inaugurated in 1989 by President François Mitterrand, this 12-meter-long and 7-meter-high sculpture is constructed from 3,000 stainless steel elements weighing a total of 10 tons.
Locals often call this work "The Snake," and the square where it stands, the "Snake Roundabout," has become a significant geographical landmark in Lille.
