Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception - Bruges Assebroek

Highlight • Religious Site

A first chapel or church stood on that site at the end of the 12th century. It was founded by the lords of Assebroek and dedicated to Mary Magdalene. In 1572 the church was largely destroyed by the Beggars, but in 1628 it was rebuilt by the then lord of Assebroek, Jacques de Noyelles, and dedicated to Mary Magdalene and Our Lady.

In 1720, Pieter Verhaeghe became a pastor and he brought with him a miraculous statue of Mary in Baroque style that he had received from a Beguine from Diksmuide. This statue was placed in the church in 1720, which led to a large influx of pilgrims. This was why the church was enlarged and dedicated to Mary Immaculate in 1746.
