Arlington Reservoir

Highlight • Natural Monument

Set amongst 120 acres (49 ha) of green landscape, Arlington Reservoir is a designated Local Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest which is home to many different animal species. The best place to watch the wildlife is from the Osprey bird hide on the northwest bank. Look out for cormorants, swallows, mallards, coots, Canada geese, and black swans. Popular with birdwatchers and fishermen, the reservoir also serves water to around 2.1 million people in East Sussex.

The Long Man of Wilmington

Highlight • Monument

Windover Hill is famous for the Longman of Wilmington (or the ‘Wilmington Giant’), a huge figure carved into the slopes.

The human figure is 235 feet (72 m) tall and holds two ‘staves’.

View of Litlington White Horse

Highlight • Viewpoint

A section of Litlington Road, where you can see the Litlington White Horse on the hillside on the opposite side of the Cuckmere valley.

32.1 km

This is the western, Litlington Road, access point (and car park) to Friston Forest, which has a good network of cycle and walking trails, including some relatively good quality singletrack.

A scenic river valley country park set in rolling farmland alongside grass topped white chalk cliffs in the South Downs National Park. It’s most famous for the iconic Seven Sisters (Haven Brow, Short Brow, Rough Brow, Brass Brow, Flat Brow, Bailey’s Hill and Went Hill) and for the ox-bow lake on the River Ouse, which could have come out of a geography school book!

Cuckmere Valley Viewpoint

Highlight • Natural Monument

The car park and access to the Cuckmere Valley can get quite congested due to the amount of traffic this popular location attracts. The bridge across the Cuckmere is a single lane so vehicles stack up on both sides and there’s not a lot of room to filter past.

Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

There are two public footpaths that cross the reserve and a new cycle path that runs all the way to Seaford. The cycle path is part of National Cycle Route 2.
The routes are flat and suitable for both adults and children. The bike path and footpath to the bird viewing screen are paved and suitable for electric buggies and wheelchairs.
The other footpath is not paved and is not a dedicated cycle path, but you can cycle along it in dry weather (within the reserve). Don't cycle past it when the ground is soft, as your tires can damage the surface.
