Wouwerse Beemden

Highlight • Natural

Klein Schijn winds its way through the Wouwerse meadows. This nature reserve was once home to Baron Pierre de Caters, the first Belgian aviator. Jan Olieslager and Jules Tyck also made history here in 1908-1909. The first flight on Belgian soil took place a little further away in Sint-Job-in-'t Goor. Baron Peerke de Caters was the first official Belgian aviator. My grandfather, who served at the Caters court, witnessed this from the front row. The tall, stately trees bordering the horse pasture were planted by him. A fond family memory...

A place to daydream

Highlight • Viewpoint

A very nice place with a resting bench located next to a small fen. Ideal place to muse on the past and the future. A person does not need more.

Formerly a quiet place where you could see numerous dragonflies, butterflies and frogs, now very well known by walkers, cyclists and joggers.

The large domain - nature reserve La Garenne of 450 hectares, which extends over the municipalities of Schoten - Sint-Job and 's-Gravenwezel, offers a view of the territory of' s-Gravenwezel. With some luck you can sometimes spot wild boars here. The walking path here meanders along the private domain. You can also relax at the musing net. Also an ideal place for a picnic.

Lock bunkers were located at various locations along the Antitankgracht route (33 km). These lock bunkers were built to maintain the water level.

Veteran Tree WWI

Highlight • Natural Monument

Veteran trees are monumental trees that are in the decay phase. Even more than dead wood, they play a crucial role for biodiversity. As soon as a tree enters the last phase of life, the chainsaw is often brought out for safety. Yet it is precisely this last phase that is the richest, as it represents a community of rare and specialized organisms. Veteran trees are indispensable to a range of bats, beetles and fungi and therefore deserve our attention. Small adjustments often suffice to solve the problems (lack of light, risk of splitting) that veteran trees struggle with and to give them a safe and longer life.

The Gravinnenbos

Highlight • Forest

The Gravinnenbos is a nature reserve between the Groot and Klein Schijn.
It is part of the Green Belt around Antwerp. This nature reserve is also the habitat for deer and pine martens. The excellent water quality of the Hofbeek and the Antitankgracht ensure that the woodland damselfly and lake comb are frequently observed. The many gael thickets, heather heaths and cotton straw are also the habitat for the viviparous lizard and the variegated fathead.
In the forests you can spot buzzards, hawks and tawny owls. The tree pipit, garden warbler and pied flycatcher return every year to breed.

Catershof - Pleasure Court

Highlight • Historical Site

Originally a farm building from the 15th century and extensively renovated as Hof van Plaisance in the 17th century. This court has acquired its grandeur through the influence of the inhabitants of the noble family de Caters. Great-grandparents served with Baroness Mathilde de Caters in the late 19th century. Her cousin Baron Pierre de Caters was the sole heir. Peerke de Caters is perhaps better known as the first Belgian Aviator. Grandfather witnessed this in 1909 at the airport in St. Job. At the rear of the domain you now have a view of the beautiful park domain. Great-grandfather and grandfather have performed many works here in the park domain. Old trees can attest to this if they can talk. Still a special one in our family history.
