The naval memorial is the landmark of the Kiel Fjord.

In addition to the striking tower, the complex also includes an underground memorial hall, the historical hall with numerous ship models and other exhibits relating to the history of the navy and shipping, as well as a 7000 square meter place of honor covered with Weser sandstone. Today the ensemble is one of the few architectural examples of Expressionism in Germany.

From 1993 - 1998 the facility underwent a comprehensive renovation. Parallel to the structural measures, the content of the memorial was carefully checked in close cooperation with competent historians in order to clarify misleading representations while preserving historical context and to update the overall statement in a worthy and appropriate form. The establishment of the memorial sites for the German Navy and civil shipping, which took place in 1996, is part of this process, which has not yet been completed but will also be subject to constant change in the future. In addition to the Bundeswehr memorial in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin, all members of the Navy who died at sea are officially commemorated in Laboe.

As a memorial and memorial, more than 100,000 visitors visit the Navy Memorial every year. The marine memorial dominates the surrounding landscape from both the water and the land side. The high tower with the line rising boldly from the land side often inspires people to compare it with a sail, a submarine tower or a ship's prow. Rather, the architect Gustav August Munzer wanted to symbolize a “flame rising to the sky”.
