Schmutter River

Highlight • River

The Schmutter is one of the most important rivers in the Western Forests Nature Park. With a length of 96 km, the Schmutter is a small tributary of the Danube.
The Schmutter rises in the perennials about three kilometers west of Siebnach and flows in a northerly direction through the hill country and the Western Forests Nature Park towards the Danube. In Fischach the Schmutter is at the confluence of Neufnach and Erk "Neufnach and Erk bring the Schmutter to work".
From Neusäß it runs on the western edge of the Lech Valley. At the lower reaches of it it flows into the Danube. The mouth of the Schmutter near Donauwörth forms the historic end point of the Via Claudia.

The bee park, which opened in October 2020, is an environmental education facility for target groups of all ages, starting from kindergarten age.
The aim of the educational work of the bee park is to promote skills and values for a sustainable lifestyle through various offers.
Central thematic contents are wild and honey bees and other flower-pollinating insects as well as the preservation of their habitats.
The development of the project and the elaboration of the educational concept took place in close, interdisciplinary cooperation with schools, beekeeping associations and specialist offices.
Among other things, adventure days with school classes and pedagogically supported events for various target groups are planned.

The former train station in Adelsried is now used as the clubhouse of the Adelsried Horticultural and Landscape Management Association
The former railway line between Neusäß and Welden is also known as the Weldenbahn. The rails were dismantled from spring 1987 onwards. At Adelsried station there are still some removed, but never removed, track remnants.
The Weldenbahn was largely preserved as a paved bike path. This is known as the District Administrator Dr. Frey cycle path and is also used by inline skaters.
